One fact that we don’t have to persuade anyone to believe is that in 2014 more people used online reviews when selecting a physician. In fact, research done by Software Advice (softwareadvice.com) found that use of online reviews when selecting a physician was up 68%! In fact, that’s the #1 Remarkable Finding. At Chatterbox Reviews, we help physicians systematically build their online reputation on sites like Vitals.com, Healthgrades.com and others, so we keep our “eye on the ball” so to speak.
How Important are Online Reviews for Doctors?
Apparently extremely important! The Software Advice research showed that (remarkable Finding #2 alert) nearly half of respondents would go out-of-network for a doctor that has more favorable reviews. To be honest, we didn’t see that coming at all. We knew their value from the beginning of our launch and it keeps getting confirmed.
In a recent study conducted by Michigan State University & C. S. Mott Children’s Hospital respondents were given 3 scenarios:
- Pediatrician is in your network and neighbor says that’s where they take their child
- Pediatrician is in your network and neighbor says that’s where they take their child + the doc has positive online reviews
- Pediatrician is in your network and neighbor says that’s where they take their child + the doc has negative online reviews
In the first scenario 22% of respondents said they were “very likely” to choose that physician and in the third scenario only 3% were “very likely” to choose that physician. However, when you combine a recommendation with positive online reviews voilà magic happens! 46% responded that they were “very likely” to choose that physician. Making the personal recommendation over 100% more effective!
Another surprise (remarkable Finding #3 approaches) Healthgrades.com has pulled even with Yelp as the most trusted physician review site. To be fair ratemd.com wasn’t included with the previous year so it is a statistical dead heat between the 3 for trustwortiness.
